I have straight hair, how do I get beachy waves with curling iron?

My hair is straight but it's layered so it goes this way and that. I want beachy natural looking waves, but how can I make it NOT stiff and hard, hairspray makes my hair so hard and stuff but I'll use it if I have to.

Spritz a styling or surf spray (Bumble %26amp; Bumble is preferable) on dry hair, then wrap 2-inch sections around a large-barreled curling iron. Tousle with your fingers, never a brush. But here's the trick: For natural looking waves, alternate the direction of the curl. Curl one section away from your face, the next towards your face, etc.
That is super cute. I do that to my hair a lot and I your hair sounds like mine so here we go!





when your hair is wet:


put in a leave-in conditioner spray i like this stuff http://www.johnfrieda.com/products/products.asp?pid=60%26amp;section=products%26amp;subSection=frizzEase%26amp;lineID=4


then put in a serum..(for shine)


when your hair is dry:


use a good 1 inch curling iron


section your hair into 3 parts (top,bottom,middle)
